Volkswagen finally bids goodbye to the last Beetle, pays tribute to the vehicle

Volkswagen finally bids goodbye to its last New Beetle in Puebla plant in Mexico. The discontinuation of the Beetle was announced in the month of March last year while the company has released the Final Edition after six months and now rolled out a new model.

Scott Keogh, CEO, and president of Volkswagen Group, America has said, “It’s impossible to imagine where Volkswagen would be without the Beetle. From its first import in 1949 to today’s retro-inspired design, it has showcased our company’s ability to fit round pegs into square holes of the automotive industry. While its time has come, the role it has played in the evolution of our brand will be forever cherished,”

The new Beetle is a denim blue car that has arrived with much similar design. However, the particular production is not meant for road, since the company has launched the coupe to bid farewell to the ‘New Beetle’. It will be put as a museum piece in Puebla, which will serve as an everlasting tribute to the age-old vehicle.

To rewind history, the classic compact car that was first developed in Nazi Germany in the year 1938 went a long way to become the hippie culture in the 1960s. After the difficulty in selling in Europe and North America, the company renovated and gave the rounded body a new form, which appeared as ‘New Beetle’. Another model or third gen variant was introduced in the year 2011.

In terms of sales, the retro-inspired design with groovy interior attracted a good number of buyers. While the first gen coupe touched 21.5 million sales, the first New Beetle reached 1.2 million number in the global market between 1998 and 2010. The final generation of Beetle reached more than 500,000 sales.
